By the sea
In the east, the land rises from the Adriatic Sea. Kilometers of sandy beaches alternate with special coastal strips such as the Monte Conero and Monte San Bartolo nature parks with their steep cliffs and turquoise dream beaches. Former fishing villages on green hilltops overlooking the sea dominate the landscape, as do small harbor towns full of evidence of past centuries.
Every season has something special to offer.
From mid-May to the end of September, bathing fun and lively beach life are the order of the day.
In the cooler seasons, peace returns and the beaches invite you to take long walks. Only the gentle sound of the waves and the wind penetrates the silence, while the winter sun casts warm rays and long shadows.
If you like fish, you are in good hands. You can enjoy the catch of the day to the full in a variety of excellent restaurants, accompanied by a good glass of white wine of the autochthonous Pecorino or Passerina varieties.
On the rolling hills
Leaving the sea behind, we soon reach the land of rolling hills, affectionately referred to by the locals as "le dolci colline".
In the wide valleys and on the flanks of the hills are orchards and vegetable gardens of all kinds. Grain fields, sunflowers, olive groves and vineyards are particularly eye-catching, depending on the season. Monocultures are a foreign concept.
From the hilltops, historic villages look out over the surrounding countryside. Well-preserved town walls, watchtowers and fortresses are silent witnesses to an insecure and warlike past.
Very typical of the Marche landscape are the "calanchi", huge earth faults that occasionally cut deep furrows and trenches through the rolling hills.
The gentle hills welcome their guests almost timelessly. Just a few kilometers away from the glamorous beach life is enough to offer visitors peace and relaxation even in summer. Small festivals, exhibitions, concerts, theater and, last but not least, the usual gathering of people in the evening piazza determine the cultural life.
The locals love to eat together and celebrate it often and with pleasure. In addition to pasta in all its forms and varieties, arrosticini of sheep or a succulent roast wild boar are the preferred dishes. Full-bodied red wine, preferably a Rosso Piceno, provides the perfect accompaniment.
Truffles (tartufi) are a special delicacy of the Marche region, which are marketed as scorzone, nero or bianco depending on the season and are often priced in gold in dry years. A special encounter for the palate and nose!
In the mountains
Moving further inland, we soon reach the rugged and lonely mountain ranges of the Apennines. The Mediterranean flora recedes with every meter of altitude and an alpine environment becomes increasingly noticeable. Towns and villages become rarer and vast forests dominate the landscape. Individual roads wind their way up the steep mountain slopes to the tree line and beyond.
The heart of the region is the Monti Sibillini National Park, whose peaks in the west drop steeply down to the famous plateau of Norcia and the neighboring region of Umbria. In winter and spring, the mountain formations, which are up to 2,500 m high, are often covered with a meter-high blanket of snow that accompanies the eye of the distant observer until early summer.
Experienced hikers can reach the peaks of Monte Vettore, Pizzo del Diavolo, Monte Redentore and Monte Sibilla in hikes lasting several hours and are rewarded with incredible views as far as the sea.
An incredible variety of plants and flowers cover the green meadows and pastures in summer. Shepherds with their flocks of sheep roam the countryside and play cat and mouse with wolves and golden eagles, who like to take advantage of the one or other carelessness of the watchful Maremmani.
